What is the TyG Index?

The Triglyceride-Glucose (TyG) Index is a mathematical formula calculated from fasting triglyceride and fasting glucose levels. It is recognized as a simple, reliable, and cost-effective surrogate marker for insulin resistance.

Unlike more complex tests like HOMA-IR, the TyG index does not require an insulin measurement, making it highly accessible in general clinical practice for assessing metabolic health.

Why is it Important?

  • Provides a strong indicator of insulin resistance without the cost and complexity of an insulin assay.
  • Higher TyG Index values are associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and cardiovascular diseases.
  • It is a useful tool for screening large populations and for monitoring the impact of lifestyle interventions on metabolic health.

Interpreting the TyG Index

Normal Range (< 4.5): A value in this range suggests better insulin sensitivity and a lower risk of associated metabolic disorders.
High Risk (≥ 4.5): A value in this range is strongly associated with insulin resistance and an increased risk for metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes.

Managing Your TyG Index

A high TyG Index reflects underlying insulin resistance, which can often be managed and improved through proactive lifestyle changes:

  • Follow a balanced diet low in refined carbohydrates and sugars, and rich in fiber.
  • Incorporate regular physical activity, including both aerobic and resistance exercises.
  • Maintain a healthy weight, as excess body fat, particularly visceral fat, contributes to insulin resistance.
  • Limit alcohol consumption and avoid smoking to improve overall metabolic function.
