TyG Index Calculator
What is the TyG Index?
The Triglyceride-Glucose (TyG) Index is a mathematical formula calculated from fasting triglyceride and fasting glucose levels. It is recognized as a simple, reliable, and cost-effective surrogate marker for insulin resistance.
Unlike more complex tests like HOMA-IR, the TyG index does not require an insulin measurement, making it highly accessible in general clinical practice for assessing metabolic health.
Why is it Important?
- Provides a strong indicator of insulin resistance without the cost and complexity of an insulin assay.
- Higher TyG Index values are associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and cardiovascular diseases.
- It is a useful tool for screening large populations and for monitoring the impact of lifestyle interventions on metabolic health.

Managing Your TyG Index
A high TyG Index reflects underlying insulin resistance, which can often be managed and improved through proactive lifestyle changes:
- Follow a balanced diet low in refined carbohydrates and sugars, and rich in fiber.
- Incorporate regular physical activity, including both aerobic and resistance exercises.
- Maintain a healthy weight, as excess body fat, particularly visceral fat, contributes to insulin resistance.
- Limit alcohol consumption and avoid smoking to improve overall metabolic function.
