HOMA-BETA Calculator
What is HOMA-BETA?
HOMA-BETA (Homeostatic Model Assessment for Beta-cell function) is a calculation that estimates the function of the beta cells in your pancreas. These cells are responsible for producing, storing, and releasing insulin.
It is often used alongside HOMA-IR to provide a more complete picture of glucose metabolism. While HOMA-IR assesses insulin resistance, HOMA-BETA assesses insulin secretion capacity.
Why is Beta-Cell Function Important?
- Indicates the pancreas's ability to produce adequate insulin.
- Helps monitor the progression of metabolic diseases like type 2 diabetes.
- Provides insights into why blood sugar levels may be abnormal.
Interpreting Your Result (Reference Guide)
Low Function (< 50%):
Suggests impaired beta-cell function. The pancreas may not be producing enough insulin.
Normal Function (50% - 150%):
Indicates a healthy and normal response from beta cells.
High / Hyper-secretion (> 150%):
May indicate that the pancreas is overworking, possibly to compensate for insulin resistance.
Supporting Your Pancreatic Health
A balanced lifestyle is key to maintaining healthy beta-cell function. Focus on habits that support your body's natural processes.
- Follow an anti-inflammatory diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and omega-3s.
- Maintain a healthy weight to reduce the workload on the pancreas.
- Engage in regular physical activity to improve overall metabolic health.
- Limit alcohol consumption and avoid smoking.
- Consult your doctor about any supplements or medications.
