What is the Matsuda Index?

The Matsuda Index is a highly regarded method for assessing insulin sensitivity that incorporates both fasting and dynamic (post-glucose load) data from an Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT).

Formula

How to Find the Mean Values

The "Mean OGTT Glucose" and "Mean OGTT Insulin" are not direct lab results. You must calculate them from the series of measurements taken during the test.

<strong>Example:</strong> If glucose was measured at 0, 30, 60, 90, and 120 minutes, add all 5 glucose values together and divide by 5 to get the mean glucose. Do the same for the insulin values.

Result Interpretation

High Insulin Sensitivity: This value suggests optimal insulin sensitivity, which is associated with excellent metabolic health.
Borderline/Intermediate Sensitivity: This value may indicate early signs of declining insulin sensitivity. Lifestyle modifications are often recommended.
Insulin Resistance Likely: This value is strongly indicative of insulin resistance, a key factor in type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome.
