What is TSAT?
Transferrin Saturation (TSAT) is a medical laboratory value that measures the percentage of iron-binding sites on transferrin that are occupied by iron. It is calculated as the ratio of serum iron to the total iron-binding capacity (TIBC), multiplied by 100.
It is a more sensitive marker for iron status than measuring serum iron or TIBC alone.
Why is TSAT Important?
- Helps in diagnosing iron deficiency anemia, often being one of the first markers to fall.
- Crucial for identifying iron overload conditions, such as hemochromatosis.
- Used to monitor iron status in patients with chronic kidney disease or those on dialysis.
Interpreting Your TSAT Result (Reference)
Low (< 20%):
Suggests potential iron deficiency. Further investigation is often needed.
Normal (20% - 50%):
Indicates adequate iron stores for normal bodily functions.
High (> 50%):
May indicate iron overload, which can be toxic to organs if left untreated.
Managing Your Iron Levels
Maintaining balanced iron levels is vital for health. Actions depend on whether your levels are low or high, and should always be guided by a physician.
- For Low Iron: Increase intake of iron-rich foods like red meat, poultry, beans, and fortified cereals. Vitamin C enhances absorption.
- For High Iron: Limit iron-rich foods and high-dose vitamin C. Therapeutic phlebotomy (blood donation) may be recommended by a doctor.
