What is the Disposition Index?
The Disposition Index is a powerful concept in metabolic health that assesses whether the pancreatic beta-cells are producing enough insulin to compensate for an individual's level of insulin sensitivity.
A healthy pancreas should increase insulin secretion to overcome resistance. The Disposition Index quantifies this relationship, typically by multiplying a measure of beta-cell function (like HOMA-BETA) by a measure of insulin sensitivity (like QUICKI).
Why is it a Powerful Marker?
- It provides a more complete metabolic picture than either insulin sensitivity or secretion alone.
- A low Disposition Index is a strong predictor of future risk for developing Type 2 Diabetes.
- It helps understand the pathophysiology of hyperglycemia: is it due to poor insulin production, poor insulin action, or both?

Holistic Metabolic Health
Improving your Disposition Index involves a dual approach: enhancing insulin sensitivity and supporting pancreatic beta-cell health.
- Follow a nutrient-dense, balanced diet.
- Engage in consistent physical activity.
- Maintain a healthy body weight.
- Prioritize adequate sleep and manage stress.
- Avoid smoking and excessive alcohol consumption.
