What is the Disposition Index?

The Disposition Index is a powerful concept in metabolic health that assesses whether the pancreatic beta-cells are producing enough insulin to compensate for an individual's level of insulin sensitivity.

A healthy pancreas should increase insulin secretion to overcome resistance. The Disposition Index quantifies this relationship, typically by multiplying a measure of beta-cell function (like HOMA-BETA) by a measure of insulin sensitivity (like QUICKI).

Why is it a Powerful Marker?

  • It provides a more complete metabolic picture than either insulin sensitivity or secretion alone.
  • A low Disposition Index is a strong predictor of future risk for developing Type 2 Diabetes.
  • It helps understand the pathophysiology of hyperglycemia: is it due to poor insulin production, poor insulin action, or both?

Interpreting Your Result (Reference Guide)

Impaired Compensation (Lower Value): A lower index suggests that beta-cell insulin secretion is not adequately compensating for the level of insulin resistance. This indicates a higher risk for progressing to hyperglycemia.
Adequate Compensation (Higher Value): A higher index suggests that beta-cell function is appropriately adapted to the individual's insulin sensitivity, which is a sign of good metabolic health.

Holistic Metabolic Health

Improving your Disposition Index involves a dual approach: enhancing insulin sensitivity and supporting pancreatic beta-cell health.

  • Follow a nutrient-dense, balanced diet.
  • Engage in consistent physical activity.
  • Maintain a healthy body weight.
  • Prioritize adequate sleep and manage stress.
  • Avoid smoking and excessive alcohol consumption.
