What is ASCVD Risk?

ASCVD (Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease) refers to conditions like heart attack, stroke, and other circulatory problems caused by plaque buildup in the arteries. The ASCVD Risk Calculator estimates your 10-year risk of experiencing one of these events.

This calculator uses the Pooled Cohort Equations, developed by the American College of Cardiology (ACC) and American Heart Association (AHA) in 2013, to provide a personalized risk assessment based on key health factors.

Why Calculate Your ASCVD Risk?

  • To understand your personal risk of heart disease and stroke.
  • To guide discussions with your doctor about preventive strategies and lifestyle changes.
  • To make informed decisions about managing your cardiovascular health.

Interpreting Your 10-Year ASCVD Risk Score

Low Risk (< 7.5%): Your 10-year risk of ASCVD is considered low. Continue to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Intermediate Risk (7.5% - 19.9%): Your 10-year risk is intermediate. Discuss with your doctor about potential lifestyle changes and risk-reducing strategies.
High Risk (≥ 20%): Your 10-year risk is high. It is strongly recommended to consult your doctor for a comprehensive risk assessment and management plan.

Managing Your Cardiovascular Risk

Regardless of your calculated risk, several lifestyle modifications can significantly improve your cardiovascular health and reduce your risk over time:

  • Adopt a heart-healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins.
  • Engage in regular physical activity (at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week).
  • Maintain a healthy weight or lose excess weight if needed.
  • Manage blood pressure and cholesterol levels, often with lifestyle changes or medication as advised by your doctor.
  • Quit smoking if you are a smoker, as it is one of the biggest risk factors.
  • Manage diabetes effectively if you have it.
