How to Convert Creatinine Units

For creatinine, 1 mg/dL is equivalent to 88.4 µmol/L. To convert mg/dL to µmol/L, multiply by 88.4. To convert µmol/L to mg/dL, divide by 88.4.

When creatinine is reported in mg/L, multiply by 8.84 to obtain µmol/L. Conversely, divide µmol/L by 8.84 to obtain mg/L.

Creatinine is a waste product associated with normal muscle metabolism and is commonly used as a filtration marker. Serum creatinine is frequently incorporated into equations that estimate glomerular filtration rate, but the concentration alone does not provide a complete assessment of kidney function.

Interpretation should consider the specimen type, laboratory method, local reference interval, and the patient’s clinical context.

  • Creatinine concentration may be influenced by muscle mass, age, diet, hydration, pregnancy, medications, and acute illness.
  • A creatinine result should not be converted directly into an eGFR without using a validated equation and the required patient variables.
  • Kidney assessment commonly combines serum creatinine-based eGFR with urine albumin measurement when clinically appropriate.
  • Reference intervals for serum creatinine must not be applied to urine creatinine results.
